Some time back i happened to visit an Art gallery and i was totally impressed , by the beautiful work which was on display from different Artists.From a place of intuition,i had an amazing conversation with one of the Artists, who was very clear about his vision behind his Art work.While in our conversation, i noticed a common principle that all Artists share, which is PRACTICE .As he narrated to me his journey to becoming a professional artist ,he highlighted how he had to perfect his gift through practice, over and over from a place of passion,patience and focus, in order to achieve what he has achieved over the years.
From the above simple illustration,the quality of your counselors is very important. Receiving good advice is an art and it is perfected through practice.The more you perfect yourself in the process of receiving good advice the better you become at receiving good advice.
Let’s take a look at the life of Ruth in the book of Ruth 3:1-5 Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, shall I not seek security for you, that it may be well with you? Now Boaz, whose young women you were with, is he not our relative? In fact, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. Therefore wash yourself and anoint yourself, put on your best garment and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. Then it shall be, when he lies down, that you shall notice the place where he lies; and you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lie down; and he will tell you what you should do..And she said to her, “All that you say to me I will do.”
From the above context, Ruth did not know everything concerning the Jewish traditions, where courtship was concerned.Yes, she had been married to a jew ,who later on died however she was humble enough to take wise instructions from her mother-in-law, who was a widow just like her.On the other hand in regards to Naomi,she desired the best for Ruth and only gave her the best advice, a mother could give to her own daughter.So,what can we glean from these two women???
- Ruth did not know everything concerning the Jewish culture.
- From previous chapters,Ruth had mastered the Art of listening to Naomi.
- With time Ruth had cultivated enough trust with Naomi.
- Naomi desired the best for Ruth.
There are several points you can glean from Ruth, in order to receive wise counsel,
1.You have to consider your own limitations: – You don’t know everything from your oen understanding.
2.You are limited in experience: You have not gone through everything in life to have all the experience you need in life.
3.You are limited in competence:-As much as you have received training in one area, there is someone who knows something better than you do.
After you have considered the above steps, why you ought to receive counsel, you need to understand that there are people who will enrich your life through counsel and there are those who will deplete you, through wrong counsel.
From the character of Naomi ,there are also few points You can learn in order to examine the quality of people who you receive advice from.
1.They should have good character, check their track record.
2.They should have experience in that area. Practical wisdom,
3.They should have the ability to keep secrets.
3.They are supposed to see you properly without malice or envy, in short they ought to desire the best for you.

After you have received counsel, commit all the options to God in prayer and seek His will.For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, and in a multitude of counselors there is safety. Proverbs 24:6
