Knowing God’s Voice

Some years ago while still young in salvation, i really used to wonder how do people hear God? How does he speak to them that they know for sure it is Him speaking and they are not hearing their own voice? This mystery was such a real issue for me to deal with. I read His word, prayed, fasted but the urge of knowing His voice never fizzled out. What I never realized is, I had heard His voice the day I gave my life to Him. In the book of John 6:44-45 Jesus says, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. “It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. It was God’s voice that drew me to Him.
After some few months of really yearning to know His voice, He spoke to me in one of the simplest ways that I knew for sure it was Him. There was no loud voice, or wind, I was just in my house alone and His presence was right there with me. Later on, I came to learn, as long as you are in tune with Him, God does speak to us in many diverse ways. Your prayer closest is not the only place God can speak, you can be walking, watching tv , driving, playing with your kids then He speaks. My perspective of hearing God was quite funny, I knew I had to be in a still place, for Him to speak and many times whenever He spoke, I could hardly recognize His voice because I had already limited my heart from hearing Him.
God can speak to you anywhere and at any time what really matters is, are you in sync with Him to know his voice??Let me illustrate one of a simple way that God spoke to me, which was so profound. On this particular Saturday, I was getting ready to go for a meeting in church. I had to make sure, I had done all the house chores before leaving .While in my usual routine of boiling water for my use, my electric kettle got spoilt. Being a lady who never majored on physics as a subject back in high school, I never knew how to fix the kettle. I thought it would be a good idea to drop the kettle to a nearby technician, who would check on it and rush to church.
That seemed a good idea which would save me time. I got to the technician and surprisingly enough, the technician made it a priority to check on it and the problem was a small issue that he sorted it out within minutes. Due to time ticking so fast, I told him i had to rush somewhere but he insisted i wait, as it would not take long. Once he was done, I got my kettle back but i still suggested to him to leave the kettle and pass by later on in the evening, right there God spoke to me and nudged me to take the kettle back home.
When I approached my house and reached out for my house keys, they were missing!!! That was quite unusual . I could hardly believe my eyes, when i got to the door steps of my house and saw my keys dangling at the doorknob .I was extremely shocked, of how I could forget my keys at the door. Right there, I knew God’s voice was so clear urging me to go back to my house. At that particular moment, I was not in prayer or reading the bible, i was busy doing my stuff and God spoke. What if I never listened to God’s voice?? Somebody with ill intentions would have been used by the devil, to harm me in ways only God knows but He prevented that from happening by speaking to me. Such an experience, illustrates of how God speaks to us in simple but diverse ways.
It’s unfortunate, most of us are caught up with our plans that we fail to know God is actually speaking. In the book of 1 Kings 19:11-13“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
From the above context,Prophet Elijah was waiting to hear on God, there was wind, fire, but God was not in all those forms, He spoke to him in a still small voice. Please hear me out, God has ordained good works for you to walk in but it’s by being in-sync with the Holy Spirit that you will know where to walk, how to walk, and when to walk. God sometimes speaks to people through dreams, visions, audible voice and even through that still small voice. God also speaks through other people; sometimes He speaks through people that may not even be Christians. God sometimes speaks through circumstances, opening and closing doors of opportunities.
Take note :- We are not to be led by people or by circumstances but only by the Holy Spirit. The key is to recognize God’s voice when He speaks.
As believers we are to walk by faith not by sight, and faith comes by hearing the spoken word of God and recognizing His voice.
Amazing Scriptures to meditate on,in your journey of Knowing God’s voice when He speaks:-
